Even for people who love cooking, cooking as a couple can be a unique offer. Many couples find their kitchens too crowded, ideas too high, timing too tight, to share the reins with someone else. Being a well oiled machine in the kitchen requires practice, patience and strategy. We found it worth the effort. We have been cooking and eating together for over 10 years, and as a couple we thought we would share the top 10 things we learned about cooking, as we had about a month left for our Haiti in Pittsburgh without leaving our kitchen kitchen:
- Divide and conquer. When we’re both equally responsible for a meal, the result is inevitably disappointing. Through trial and error, we learned to avoid this by choosing a clue for each dish. When one person is responsible, the other takes the supportive role and follows their leadership.
- Cook in your strengths. Although we both like cooking and cooking, we’re not good at (or disliked) any kind of food. Paul is a meaty genius, but sometimes he feels not inspired by vegetables. Likewise, baked products containing yeast also affect me. We learned to work on a “counseling system”, if I am cooking a meat ingredient, I ask Paul to cook this part.
- Eat food someone else made.Maybe it’s intuitive, but it’s important to us. Ever since I went to college, we have tried to allocate time for dinner dates every week. Whether in the restaurant or at home, meals cooked by someone else help us feel burns in the kitchen.
- Cook for guests. This is a double whammy. The positive supplement of a common dish cooked jointly with customers is a great feeling and also inspires more organized and creative dishes.
- Shop together. When cooking, when we don’t want to eat, we go to a shopping date for protein inspiration for our local fish market, butcher or cheese shop, and create a meal around an item. These unplanned dates, gathered around a beautiful fresh protein or product, have caused some of the best dishes, and sometimes the worst, but this is another story.
- Cook on other people’s palate. There is nothing more satisfying than making excited food.
- Local food. Trying to decide what to buy at the grocery store every week before buying our CSA box (Community Assisted Agriculture) can lead to repeated meals. For people you do not know, CSA is a weekly product box that you get with a nice variety of local products throughout the growing season. Having surprisingly fresh products is a great guide for seasonal meal planning and nudges to get in the kitchen on lazy weekdays nights to try with unusual products.
- Freeze leftovers at lunch. The leftovers can be good, but they can also be overwhelming, boring, and inspirational. In our early marriage, the leftovers were a source of contention, for the first time I did not want to eat dinner that was left on the same stew, which was only slightly delicious, and Paul decided not to let the food go to waste. We found a good compromise. With a few exceptions, we freeze almost all (freezable) leftovers for business meals in ramekins. It’s an easy way to get stuffed and get hot lunches, and it eliminates coming home to the scary night of the remaining bean night.
- Make a list. In our kitchen, we have a board with a list of our CSA products and other perishable fruits and vegetables. In this way, we can always see what we have for food.
- Be inspired by travel. When traveling in the U.S. or abroad, we love enrolling in cooking classes. Read a bunch of cookbooks before we go and buy our favorites after the trip. It’s a fun joint project and a common way for us to connect to the places we visit.
