The Right Way to Hold a Kettlebell
For lots of kettlebell lifts, you’ll hold it similarly to a dumbbell grip—through the middle of the handle. Still, you’ll want to keep your fingers light around them, especially even when doing explosive moves like kettlebell swings. It may seem intimidating at first not to suffocate the damn thing, but for your wrist health and the ultimate quality of your movement, it’s much better to apply softness in your grip during moves like swings. To test this, you should be able to swing your fingertips slightly above the handle at the top of your stroke.
For more complex removals like cleansing, plucking, and Turkish makeup, you’ll want to apply an offset hold. To prevent the kettlebell from falling painfully onto your wrist or forearm, do not hold it in the middle. Instead, pinch the pad between your index finger and thumb against the curve of the handle. If you are right-handed, you will lean on the left side of the handle; with your left hand, you will lean on the right side of the handle.
