SAMe (S-Adenosyl Methionine): Why and How to Use?

S-Adenosyl Methionine: SAMe, is an important option in the treatment of many diseases from depression to fibromyalgia. So what exactly does SAMe do? How is it used? I know you’re wondering, here are the answers!

I know you’ve heard a lot about S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe). I have something to share about this supplement that I use a lot in the clinic.

Because even though there is nutritional support on paper, the effects of SAMe are serious enough to be evaluated in the “medicine” category. Therefore, I am sure that knowing SAMe well will make people struggling with diseases happy.

For this reason, I will share many details from SAMe definition, usage, effects, and dose range that you are curious about.

If you are ready we go!

What is SAMe?

The combination of methionine, an amino acid, and ATP, which is used as an energy source in the body; This substance, known as S-adenosyl methionine, S-adenosyl L-methionine, or SAMe, is very important. Because it is a methyl donor and is more effective than other methyl donors.

The methyl donor protects cells from important problems such as cancer and aging, as it reduces the damage of important structures. So if you have more methyl donors in your body, you will be better protected.

The fact that SAMe is a methyl donor means that it takes part in many chemical reactions in the body and ensures the continuation of metabolic functions. You will realize how important the SAMe is when you consider it participating in more than 100 chemical reactions.

I know you are wondering about the details. Let’s continue!

In what situations can the SAMe be used?

There are five different uses for S-adenosyl methionine that have been identified and approved. I will share these points with you. But I want you to know, new ones will be added to the fields listed below because research continues.

Depression

SAMe is required for the production of transmission elements such as phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylserine in the brain. Therefore, it enables many neurological functions to continue.

At the same time, studies show that the levels of serotonin associated with depression increase with the use of SAMe, and that its passage to the cell, thus, increases its activity.

In fact, some studies show that SAMe is more effective and well-tolerated than commonly used tricyclic antidepressant drugs in severe conditions such as major depression.

Other research suggests that SAMe can be a potential treatment tool in many situations, such as improving postpartum depressive symptoms and reducing symptoms of schizophrenia.

Unfortunately, this data is still in its infancy. There are also big questions about its use in schizophrenia. Therefore, it is useful to be careful.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, more commonly known as arthritis, is an important disease that is caused by damage to the cartilages in the joint structure, which seriously affects the quality of life and movement.

“Depression is okay, but what’s the relationship between arthritis and SAMe?” I hear what you say.

This discovery actually comes from the improvement in osteoarthritis symptoms of people during research on depression.

When the research continues, SAMe

  • It slows down the destruction in the joint by reducing inflammation,
  • It accelerates proteoglycan production for the repair of the joint,
  • It relieves the person by acting as a pain reliever,
    showing.

These data are very valuable because we clearly see that SAMe can continue the treatment in two ways with a restorative and pain relief effect without causing side effects like painkillers.

Liver diseases

Increased toxic substances, malnutrition, and other problems increased the risk of liver disease. With the increase in the frequency and severity of the disease, sometimes the natural and chemical treatment tools we have are not sufficient.

At this point, I would like to talk about some effects that can be used in liver diseases. Research shows that SAMe,

  • It can reduce the mortality rate and/or liver transplantation rate in individuals with cirrhosis,
  • It can decrease liver enzyme height due to toxic factors,
  • It can improve the process when used in addition to medical treatment in cholestasis, which is a condition of inhibition of bile flow.

As a result, SAMe can be evaluated as an adjunct to treatment in complex liver diseases.

I would like to share a nice animal experiment as well.

Using the SAMe in mice exposed to chemicals that cause liver cancer may reduce the risk of cancer. This data shows that SAMe can be used experimentally, especially in individuals who receive chemotherapy and are at risk of liver cancer.

I share this with my patients at the clinic and include my options according to the situation.

Fibromyalgia

There are many different approaches to fibromyalgia, one of the annoying diseases left in the dark, whose origins have not been investigated.

The main approach is to “stop the pain, get rid of the patient”.

Sorry, that doesn’t work. Because when you do not get to the root of the event, no pain reliever for fibromyalgia will work.

To explain this to my patients, I give an example of embanking the landslide area. Because no set can prevent landslides. The real solution is to compact the soil!

In fibromyalgia, another agent that will support the process, apart from reducing inflammation and looking at the origin, is SAMe. It helps to increase the glutathione level and also has a pain-relieving effect by increasing the serotonin level.

SAMe (S-Adenosyl Methionine): Why and How to Use?

Things to watch out for when using SAMe

The first rule is physician approval, of course. As with all other supplements, consult your physician before using SAMe. If everything is fine and SAMe is recommended, I recommend you pay attention to the following points

  • Avoid SAMe use in bipolar, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s diseases, and pregnancy.
  • Some findings related to folate deficiency may disappear with the use of SAMe. In this case, never stop using folic acid.
  • Do not take SAMe with antidepressants or 5-HTTP. Although it is seen as safe, we do not have any definitive evidence on the subject.

Also, do not take SAMe if you are using a drug containing dextromethorphan active ingredient. For you to understand the seriousness of the matter, dextromethorphan is even found in cough syrups that are described as “simple”!

Dosage recommendation

I prescribe SAMe for a wide range of doses for my patients. Therefore, I will not have a clear suggestion. But I have prepared a simple table for you to understand the situation.

IllnessMinimum DoseMaximum Dose
Depression800 mg1.200 mg
Osteoarthritis400 mg1.200 mg
Liver disease800 mg1.200 mg
Fibromyalgia800 mg1.000 mg

Now you know a lot about S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe). I hope we can find SAMe in our country in the near future. Because currently, we can only procure SAMe from abroad, and I provide SAMe to my patients in this way.

Also, don’t forget to share your questions and comments with me!
