In our country, many people who are members of various professions that do not have the competence to diagnose and treat psychiatric illnesses and who are not competent in medicine, engage in diagnosis and treatment practices that will lead to undesirable results and this situation threatens the public health. Despite the legal regulations on the subject, inadequate supervision and the introduction of some media outlets to the public through programs that we think are incompatible with the responsible broadcasting approach increases the dimensions of the problem. The Psychiatric Association of Turkey feels the responsibility to inform the public and the press on this issue.

In our country, the definition of occupational groups dealing with mental problems in many parts of society is not known enough. For example, the concepts of psychologists or psychiatrists are frequently used in the same sense. With this use, the two groups that are actually very different in terms of their education are mixed together.

According to the results of a study conducted on 500 people in Gaziantep in 2006, 56.6% of the participants evaluated the psychologists as speech and the psychiatrists as medicines.

Mental and nervous diseases were found curable by 89.2%. M. Depression symptoms are defined, then “what do you do in this situation?” 57% of the respondents answered the question “think it is a temporary situation, do nothing”. Symptoms of schizophrenia are given and “What do you do to your relative in this situation?” When asked, 51.8% of the respondents replied, “I’ll take them to the psychiatrist”. Panic disorder symptoms are defined and “What do you do in this situation?” When asked, 57% of the subjects stated that they would go to the internal medicine doctor and the respondents who gave this answer were asked in the next question, “What would you do if your internal medicine doctor directed you to the psychiatrist?” While 64.1% of the respondents answered this question as “I go to the psychiatrist”

People who have problems with mental health are also undecided about where to apply. Mental health services should be carried out in teamwork. People working in the field of mental health can be listed as follows:

Your mental and physical health is a whole. Many mental symptoms can indicate a physical illness, and many physical symptoms can indicate a mental illness. Diagnosis of mental illnesses, such as somatic illnesses, can only be made by physicians and their treatment can be made by the physician or under physician control. Psychiatrists have basic knowledge, skills, and equipment for all kinds of psychiatric practices. Advanced specialization examination can distinguish situations that require research or treatment intervention and can take the necessary precautions and guide them. All kinds of mental problems and complaints should be evaluated first by the physicians who have received a medical education, only your doctor can decide with you the treatment method. Most mental disorders can be successfully treated with biological treatments such as drug therapy and/or psychotherapy methods.
